Why is Taipei a Vegan Food Heaven?

The capital of Taiwan, Taipei is one of the most vegan friendly cities in the world. When you walk through the streets in Taipei, it’s not hard to discover new veg’n places every few steps. From a small street vendor selling dumplings, to a dessert shop selling vegan ice cream, Taipei has a lot to offer in terms of vegan food.

With a long history of Buddhism, people in general are more familiar with the concept of veg’n food. And this acts as a basis for vegan culture to grow in Taipei. With the younger generation embracing veganism, there are new places opening in Taipei constantly, making it a great place to travel to for vegan food.

Taipei Travel Information For Vegans

Best Time To Visit Taipei

Taipei is great to visit all year long, but it can get pretty hot and humid in Summer. Consider going in Spring or Autumn months.

Where To Stay In Taipei For The Best Food

Although many people online recommends staying near Taipei main station or Taipei 101, I actually prefer staying near the Da'an and Zhongxiao Fuxing subway stations for convenience and the slightly quieter vibe. Many of the vegan-friendly places are reachable with those two subway stations.

Recommended Tours & Activities

To make your trip to Taipei even more memorable, these are some of the activities I'd recommend:

Internet & Data

Using an eSim for internet access is probably the most convenient way. I recommend this eSim brand where you just need to download an app and install the eSim to get internet overseas.

Nice Cream

nice-cream-taipei-waffle-ice-cream-vegan
Vegan chocolate egg waffle with chocolate and peanut flavour ice cream

One of the most memorable items in Nice Cream is their egg waffle, and you can find it vegan here (and with vegan ice cream on top!)

Nice Cream has about 7-8 flavours of ice cream each day, ranging from classics like strawberry and chocolate, to more exotic flavours like matcha and pistachio.

The vegan egg waffle is a classic street food in Hong Kong. Obviously it is made with eggs traditionally, but Nice Cream is able to veganize that and make it as delicious as the non-vegan counterpart. It’s freshly made after choosing among a few flavours like chocolate or matcha. The top is crispy and the inside is soft and chewy. They also add a biscoff biscuit and chocolate sauce for good measure.

If you only want ice cream, you can do that as well. Other than the usual choices, you can try the all-flavours-of-the-day waffle bowl so that you don’t miss out on any of them.

Each day they have about 7-8 flavours

BaganHood

Cinnamon roll here is heavenly

BaganHood is the vegan place to go if you crave for a delicious elegant meal in an exquisite environment. Although the price is higher than many places in Taipei, the quality of food and the modern ambience justify the price.

Menu is western with burgers, pizzas, bowls, salads and more. There are a few dessert options including cinnamon roll with ice cream. And they have quite a big drink menu with coffee, tea, smoothies, milk shakes and alcohol.

taipei-vegan-cafe-baganhood-beyond-burger
Truffle mayo beyond burger

The dishes I tried are all well made and delicious. The beyond burger uses a flavourful and creamy truffle mayo, and the fries that come with the burger are crispy.

The cinnamon roll with ice cream is a must try. The warm cinnamon roll has a generous amount of cinnamon spiced sugar filling. With the ice cream on top, this dessert will satisfy any person with a sweet tooth.

They also have a shop section selling snacks, frozen food, skin care products and more.

Overall BaganHood is an amazing vegan restaurant with good food, beautiful decor and friendly service.

DeliSoys 上善豆家

Fried dumplings

DeliSoys is a high quality vegetarian restaurant that serves traditional Taiwanese cuisine in a modern setting.

Most of the items in the menu are vegan. The ones with eggs or milk are marked with 蛋素 or 奶素. Most of the main courses are vegan. Breakfast and tea sets have more non-vegan items.

Bean paste noodles

One of their signature dishes is the pan fried dumplings with a crispy web-like crust attached to it. Although it’s a bit oily, the dumplings are crispy with great flavours.

Other dishes are also impressive. Bean paste noodles with its salty flavourful sauce, fried radish cake with its crispy edges and firm consistency, and tofu pudding “douhua” with its perfectly light, soft and smooth texture.

Overall Delisoys is a great place to try out some well-made traditional dishes.

Yiihotang 一禾堂

One of the most popular vegan bakeries in Taipei, Yiihotang features a wide range of baked goods. They have a few locations in Taipei. The photos you see here are from the shop in Da’an which I find having the best selection, and it is located right next to my favorite vegan restaurant, Flourish.

You are first greeted with the Japanese garden in the entrance. There are also some seats outside where you can eat after you’ve bought the bread. Inside Yiihotang, the decor continues the Japanese influence with light wooden decor and lanterns.

Just like any good bakery, the smell from the freshly made bread is amazing. Staff is busy making and refilling the racks with fresh baked goods.

In the middle of the shop you will find the most popular breads. Their salted soy milk roll and pineapple bun are always on the top of the list. You may also see bread with red bean, cheese, or chestnut filling.

One of my favourite items here is their salted ‘egg’ pastry. Using pumpkin as egg, they are able to veganize this famous pastry in Taiwan. The lightly salted ‘egg’ is paired with sweet red bean paste for a balance and satisfying dessert. Another highlight is the pineapple cake, a famous Taiwanese pastry dessert with pineapple jam filling.

Other than those, you can find sweet and savoury breads, muffins, cookies, and even their latest creation, soy ice cream on a bread cone.

One complaint is that they use quite a lot of packaging. Other than the pre-packaged items, bread will be put in their individual bags when you pay.

Overall, this vegan bakery is a must-go no matter if you are vegan or not.

Flourish (Permanently closed)

(From top) Taiwanese minced meat brown rice, coconut curry pot, sweet and sour tofu

In one of the smaller streets in the busy Da’an district, Flourish impresses when you first walk in with its modern, relaxing environment. The front of the shop uses an ample amount of big windows to allow natural light to fill the space, perfectly setting the tone for a healthy and delicious vegan meal.

After multiple trips to Taipei, Flourish remains one of my favourites. This all-vegan cafe serves a wide range of high quality comfort food. The dishes are mostly Chinese and Western styles, with other influences from Japan, Hong Kong and Korea.

The food here is impressive with great taste and presentation. Like the sweet and sour tofu with colourful veggies or the Japanese rice bowl with scrambled tofu, the food is as pretty as they taste. Some other highlights include coconut curry casserole which goes very well with their organic brown rice.

Pineapple bun with vegan butter

Another one of my favourites is the pineapple bun with vegan butter. Pineapple bun is a Hong Kong style bread that has a crust that looks like pineapple. The bun is from Yiihotang (which is a vegan bakery under the same company) and it is warm, soft and crisp. Inside is a slice of soft vegan butter. It is a vegan dessert that is hard to find and tastes absolutely delicious.

Other than this, the fruity sorbet/ice cream on brownie is also highly recommended.

Overall, Flourish is a fantastic vegan restaurant that will impress you with their food, service and atmosphere. Be sure to also visit Yiihotang vegan bakery which is right next door.

Yang Shin Vegetarian Restaurant 養心茶樓

Xiao long bao

This is a great place to go to try out vegan Chinese yum cha and dim sum. Most of the choices are vegan. The ones with egg or milk are marked clearly.

You can find the classic dim sum like siu mai, dumplings, buns, rice noodle rolls and rice rolls here. Special mention to the black sesame paste, which is a sweet black sesame dessert. The one here is fragrant and perfectly smooth. Siu mai is pretty great as well. They also have other main dishes which will be more suitable for dinner time.

One thing to keep in mind is that this place is very busy. Despite being a decent-sized restaurant, the whole place was filled up at around 12:30.

URBN Culture

Kimchi burger

Although not the most vegan-friendly restaurant on this list, URBN Culture impresses with high quality food and modern, hip decor.

A few minute walk from Liuzhangli Station, this restaurant has a large graffiti on a wall at the front of the shop that is unmissable. Inside is an eclectic mix of colourful reclaimed wood, painted brick wall and more graffiti, creating a modern and cool atmosphere. You will also find an array of craft beer tab behind the bar.

URBN Culture is a vegetarian restaurant. The vegan items are marked with a green leaf symbol on the menu.

The most memorable dish is the Korean inspired kimchi burger. It features kimchi, bean and grain patty, mayo, alfalfa, and other veggies in the whole wheat burger bun. It’s unique and delicious. The chips are great too. Perfectly crispy and well seasoned.

You will also find other classic western dishes like pasta and sandwiches here. I wish the vegan option can be more extensive, especially for their brunch and dessert sections.

Soul R Vegan

Vegan steak on iron skillet

Soul R Vegan is a small vegan restaurant that features a relatively big menu, including some hard to find items in other restaurants.

Other than the classic pasta, risotto and burgers, you can find dishes like vegan steak served on a skillet and vegan black squid ink pasta. On the iron skillet, you can find a meaty steak with mushroom, spaghetti potatoes and veggies. The slightly sweet gravy goes well with the ingredients. The squid ink pasta is delicious, but be prepared that your lips and teeth will become black after the meal!

Their desserts are also great. Tiramisu is made with layers of vegan cream and biscuits. It is as creamy and tasty as you would imagine. Other desserts like creme brulee and lemon cheesecake are also great.

Although it’s pricier than most other veg places in Taipei, the high quality food here earns the recommendation.

Hoshina 穗科

Matcha red bean ice cream

If you are craving some Japanese udon, this vegan Japanese restaurant, Hoshina, is the place to go.

Their chewy, authentic udon is paired with different soup bases, like curry, miso and kimchi. If udon is not your thing, they also have sets with rice. Be sure to order their tempura as well as it’s well-made and crispy.

Tempura

Their desserts are also unmistakably Japanese. From warabimochi to matcha ice cream sundae, you will be delighted to find the classic Japanese sweets made vegan. My pick is the matcha red bean sundae. It comes with a matcha syrup for you to pour onto the ice cream, red bean, mochi and jelly cubes.

With 2 locations in Taipei, it is not difficult to find Hoshina and have a great Japanese meal.

Serenity 祥和蔬食料理

Smoked vegetarian goose

This restaurant earns the only Michelin recommendation for a vegetarian restaurant in Taipei with its high quality food.

The food is mostly vegan, with the non-vegan options marked with “ovo-lacto vegetarian” or “蛋奶素”. The place has about 10 tables, which can be filled up quickly during busy lunch and dinner times.

The food is cooked well. I especially like the smoked vegetarian goose which is a mixed veggies wrapped in bean curd sheets cooked in a slightly sweet soy sauce, and the brown sugar mochi. Despite being a Michelin recommended restaurant, the portion and price are good for this place.

Pure Veggie House

This shredded turnip puff is a must-try

Originally from Hong Kong, Pure Veggie House is a relatively high end vegan Chinese restaurant located near Taipei 101. Here you can find dim sum (at lunch time until 3:30pm) and classic Chinese style dishes.

One of the best dishes here is the shredded turnip puff. The turnip is cut into thin strips and cooked in a slightly sweet sauce. The outside pastry is thin, light and flaky. Very well made.

The atmosphere is modern and high end. The sofa is also comfortable, perfect for resting after a day of touring around Taipei.

Meimen Garden 梅門防空洞

Soy cutlet noodles

Located near Ximending station, Meimen Garden is a restaurant that’s themed as an underground shelter. The place is also atmospheric and decorated with various statues and art pieces.

One of the most interesting features of this restaurant is that it opens overnight every Friday night from 10pm to 6am the next day. The menu is not as extensive, but you can still enjoy a late night bowl of noodles or some traditional side dishes.

Unlike the branch mentioned above, this one is not all vegan as milk is used in a small number of dishes. Those dishes are marked clearly.

The dishes I tried are nicely made and flavourful. Although the noodle soup with crispy soy cutlet is quite oily, the specialty side dish and pineapple cake are seasoned and cooked well.

Mani Mani (Closed)

Cowboy burger with salad and fries

Mani Mani is closed in 2019 October.

Mani Mani is the place to go if you’d like a meal filled with vegan comfort food. You can find burgers, pasta, ice cream, french toast, and more. The restaurant has a modern and relaxing vibe.

The cowboy burger is highly recommended. The patty is fried and crispy, and is made with mixed beans and mushrooms. The mushroom inside is roughly cut which gives the patty a stringy and chewy texture. That mixed with the soft sweet sautéed onion, salsa, barbecue sauce, and lettuce, this burger tastes amazing. Skip the jalapeño if you can't eat spicy as they are really spicy. The chips that come with the burger is also crispy and well-spiced.

For dessert, brownie with ice cream is a great choice. Creamy ice cream mixed with soft and warm brownie is a great way to end this meal.

Ooh Cha Cha

Ooh Cha Cha has two cafes in Taipei, both of which are vegan. The menus are different, but the one near Technology Building Station has a slightly bigger menu.

One of my favorite things to eat here is their cookie ice cream sandwich. The chocolate chip cookie is baked with a soft and chewy texture. It goes well with the coconut vanilla ice cream. The cookie is so good that I bought a few more to take back home.

Other comfort food dishes include this Southwest burger with corn tomato salsa, nacho chips, and root beer float are all pretty nice. Overall Ooh Cha Cha is a nice vegan cafe serving healthy comfort food.

Plants

Bibimbap tempeh plate

Plants is a vegan eatery that focuses on healthy wholefood cuisine. It also serves some macrobiotic and raw dishes. The atmosphere is homely and relaxing with wooden decor and furniture.

The bibimbap tempeh macrobiotic plate strikes a good balance between healthy and delicious. The housemade kimchi and creamy bibimbap sauce are the highlights of the dish. Another great tasting dish is the sweet and spicy cashews, which activated/sprouted nuts coated in maple syrup, chili and other spices.

Although it’s a bit pricier than the usual Taipei cafe, the high quality food, laid-back vibe and great service earn Plants a recommendation.

Delicious oreo cake

Miss Green is a vegan eatery with two branches in Taipei. They use local and seasonal ingredients to make some delicious vegan comfort food.

Menu features western comfort classic like burgers, salad, pasta, pizza and desserts. The branch in Dunhua has a slightly bigger menu.

This signature guacamole burger is delicious with crispy patty made with beans and legumes. The tangy guac salsa goes well with the burger.

Desserts are different everyday. On the day of visit is this oreo cake, and it is amazing. The cake is creamy with pieces of nuts inside. The top is decorated with whipped cream, oreo and candied cashew. One of the best cakes I've had in a while.

Uncle Q is a vegan restaurant opened by professional basketball player Quincy Davis.

On to the food, the menu has burgers, pizzas, pasta and more. The cake selection changes daily. The price is a bit higher than other places, but the quality and presentation of food are impressive.

The mushroom risotto with an assortment of mushroom prepared in different ways, and the fried eggplant with tomato salsa and cheese on top are both delicious.

Herban Kitchen and Bar

Vegan black ink pasta

Located in a quiet alleyway of the busy Da’an district, Herban Kitchen is a great vegetarian cafe to slow down and have a vegan meal.

Herban Kitchen serves some western classics, like pasta and risotto, and some creative dishes. I especially love the cashew spinach wonton. Perfectly crispy and filled with mashed spinach and cashew cheese. The Thai sweet and spicy sauce and mint olive oil on top go very well with the wonton.

Most of the non-vegan items on the menu are marked with milk or egg symbols. However, there are a few, like the cream used in risotto, were not marked at the time of writing. Read the ingredients carefully and ask the staff if you are not sure.

Dela1010 Kaffee

Purple sweet potato crepe cake

Near Nanjing Sanmin station, this vegetarian cafe has some unique vegan offerings. The menu marks which options are vegan. For drinks, most drinks can be made vegan except the ones with white chocolate. Ask the staff if you are not sure.

The dessert that draws me to this place is the vegan cream crepe cakes. The flavours and availability change from time to time. On the day of visit, they have 3 vegan desserts.

The purple sweet potato flavour crepe cake is well made. The texture is light and soft with creamy soy cream. It doesn't have much of a sweet potato flavour except than the powder sprinkled on top. The oat mocha is nice as well with vegan chocolate swirls and chocolate sauce.

VeGeter 維珍特

Often dubbed the vegan McDonald’s in Taipei, VeGeter serves burgers and other fast food snacks that are affordable. Most of the burger sets with fries and a drink cost TW$120-130, which is about US$4.

The place is not big with only a few seats available: A big table that sits 4-6 people and 5 window facing seats.

The burgers taste good but a bit on the simpler side. I chose the peanut butter beef burger. It has peanut butter sauce with tomato, lettuce  and pickles. It’s served in a soft and toasted bun. The nuggets are simple and meaty. You can add your own sauce from the self-serving counter.

However, skip the vegan latte and osmanthus jelly as they lack flavours.

Blossom Rena 貝多蕾納

Taiwanese minced meat rice

Blossom Rena is a fusion vegan cafe serving high quality food. It’s walking distance from Minquan West Road Station.

The Taiwanese mince rice is especially impressive in taste and texture. It uses peach gum (桃膠) which is an orange color resin from peach trees. When it's cooked, it mimics the fat of meat very well because of its soft and melty texture. Other ingredients like mushrooms, water chestnuts and soy meat give it a satisfying mix of texture. Other choices include pasta and Japanese rice bowls.

They also serve delicious desserts like this creme brulee. It has a toffee caramel flavour, but could be a bit sweet for some. They also have ice cream waffle that seems to be a popular dish.

Original Vegan 原粹蔬食作

Soy milk ramen set

Located on the south side of Taipei, Original Vegan is a Japanese restaurant with a minimalist ambience.

The menu has Japanese classics like ramen, curry, tempura, hot pots and more. They also have a rather wide range of desserts like cakes, mochi and tiramisu. You place your order on the ordering sheet and pay at the counter before the meal.

The food is nice quality with big portions. I especially like the tofu ball which is pan-fried and made with a mix of tofu and veggies. For drinks, ordering the small size would be enough for one person. The large size comes in a pot which I struggled to finish by myself.

However, the soy milk ramen is not as impressive with a mild broth and only a few pieces of simple toppings.

The restaurant also has a shop section selling snacks and other vegan items. They also sometimes have organic veggies on sale.

Overall Original Vegan is a good choice if you are craving for some Japanese cuisine.

The Green Room

Green Room is one of the few places that serves Thai food and is all vegan. The place is also pretty, especially the front part of the restaurant which looks like a greenhouse.

The food is great at this place. All the dishes I tried are delicious, including the yellow curry served in a coconut, crispy spring roll and kombucha shake. One complaint is that, unlike many other veg places in Taipei, they still use plastic straw for the drink at the time of visit.

One thing to note is that the service is a bit slow here. Allocate more time if you plan to come here.

After choosing, you hand the ingredients to the staff and pay. You will receive a buzzer which will notify you when the noodles are ready (usually in a few minutes).

Although it's a bit of a walk from the Nanjing Sanmin Station (about 15 minutes), the quality of the cookies, cupcakes and packaged snacks is worth it. I especially like the snowball cookie and the mocha cookie.

As of August 2019, Mushyaki has stopped having a shop in Shilin Night Market. However, it goes to Hip Pun vegan bakery every Wednesday (from 11am to about 6pm) so you can stop by to try their vegan takoyaki. They also go to different food markets which you can check the schedule on their Facebook page.

Takoyaki is a Japanese snack that’s traditionally made with diced octopus. Substituting mushrooms for octopus, Mushyaki 寶菇燒 makes a vegan version that is as delicious and much more compassionate. The takoyaki is served with mayonnaise and other toppings. The mixed bowl is recommended as you can try all the different flavours.

Different flavours have slightly different texture, for example, the peanut flavour is like crumbly shaved ice while taro flavour is more creamy and starchy. Most of the flavours are TW$50, and you can pick 1-2 flavours in the bowl (except the specialty/signature flavours which you can only pick one).

Ask for the English menu if you need one.

The decor is simple and old school with folding tables and fans.

After you finish your dessert, head outside to the right where you can find a sink to wash the bowl and the spoon. Then put them in the corresponding places for recycling.

Hidden in an alleyway near Taipei Station, this small shop sells vegetarian Japanese fried noodles. The sauce used for the noodles is vegan.

Out of the 3 main choices, the bread one that can’t be veganised. The 2nd one is vegan if you ask for no mayo. And the 3rd kimchi one is vegan. I chose the medium sized 2nd one with no mayo. For TW$50, this fried noodles is cheap and very delicious.
