6 Vegan Street Food and Snacks In Tokyo

Tell a friend:

Snacks and traditional food are a big part of Japanese culture. You may be worried that, as a vegan, you don’t have the privilege to enjoy them.

Think again!

Tokyo is pretty great for vegan food as you may have read our guide. But as veganism is getting more popular, some of the street food and snacks are getting veganized as well.

Here are 6 of my picks of the vegan street food and snacks you can find in Tokyo:

Taiyaki Hiiragi

Taiyaki is a traditional fish-shaped desserts from Japan. Tai is a type of bream and -yaki means cooking/frying.

Taiyaki Hiiragi is a specialty shop selling freshly made taiyaki in Ebisu. The standard taiyaki here is vegan. The shop is not far away from Ebisu station.

The taiyaki tastes amazing here. The crust is thin and crispy on the edges. And it’s filled with sweet, soft red bean paste. Usually other taiyaki, which are made with egg, have a thicker outer layer. But this one is different in a good way.

There are some space and chairs outside for you to enjoy the taiyaki, as eating while walking is not common in Japan.

There are also quite a few vegan restaurants and cafes in the area, including Ko-So Cafe, Hemp Cafe Tokyo and Falafel Brothers.

Strawberry mochi from Kanesue

Kanesue sells Japanese mochi and other snacks. Only some items are vegan, like this strawberry mochi. These other ones are also vegan:

Red bean rice mochi:

Some other vegan choices may be available. Have a look at this guide and learn how to read Japanese ingredients and labels.

The strawberry mochi is very delicious. The strawberry is very sweet and the mochi is soft with red bean paste inside.

Also located in the area is Ain Soph Soar, which is a great vegan restaurant (if you don’t mind spending a bit more).

Soy matcha popsicle

Paletas is a cafe that has a few of vegan soy popsicles – Soy matcha, soy strawberry and soy fruit mix.

Inside the soy matcha one are pieces of peach and strawberry. It’s fruity and has a nice creamy matcha taste. The also have soy latte. Remember to ask for no straw!

The popsicles are around 550 yen, which is not too expensive considering the cafe is in quite a high end shopping center.

Close to Paletas is one of my favorite vegan restaurants in Tokyo – Veganic To Go. They make great burgers and more.

Good Town Doughnut

Matcha doughnut

Good Town doughnut in Harajuku has a selection of vegan doughnuts. At the time of visit, there are about 10 vegan ones. There may be fewer options later the day.

The doughnut has a nice soft bread texture. The frosting is not overly sweet and slightly tangy. It would be even better if the frosting is thicker.

You can choose to sit down at the shop or take away. There are about 20 seats inside and some benches outside. A nice place to sit down and have a break after exploring Harajuku.

The Little Bakery Tokyo

Vegan cinnamon roll

Right next to Good Town Doughnut is The Little Bakery Tokyo. It has some vegan options including cinnamon roll, doughnuts and some other bread. But they may sell out later in the day.

The cinnamon roll is nice. It’s pretty dense which some may prefer. The cinnamon filling is a bit thin and the flavor is on the mild side. The roll has a sugar coating on top.

There are no seats inside the shop, but some benches outside.

Nice Cream

Nice Cream is a vegan coconut milk ice cream brand that can be found near Tokyo station. It’s inside the KITTE shopping mall on the 2nd floor.

The ice cream is coconut milk based, and is milk, egg, soy and gluten free. Flavor may change from time to time, so please check their Instagram for the latest news.

The mandarin flavor I tried is smooth and has a citrus freshness to it. The size is a bit small for the price.

You can also check out the rooftop garden of KITTE shopping center that overlooks Tokyo Station and more.
