Vegan Options in Australia Supermarkets (Woolworths, Coles, IGA, Costco, Aldi)

Vegan shopping has never been easier in Australia. Growing with the number of vegans and people who are interested in vegan food, supermarkets in Australia start stocking more and more vegan options.

It’s not difficult to step into any of these supermarket chains and find some surprise vegan treats.

In this article, I’ll show you a glimpse of what you can find in the supermarkets in Australia. Keep in mind that most of photos are taken in Brisbane. Availability may differ from city to city.

One of my favorite supermarket chains in terms of the amount of vegan food you can find. Other than fresh fruits and veggies, you can get some plant based meat in their dedicated vegan meat section. Vegan cheese and milk are also easy to find here.

Ben & Jerry’s dairy free ice cream, Magnum ice cream pops and Cornetto’s vegan ice cream cones are perfect for desserts.

Or if you don’t feel like cooking, you can find vegan ready-meals from Made with Plants, Coco & Lucas, Ruffie Rustic Foods and more.

Similar to Woolworths, Coles offer a decent selection of vegan groceries. One of the most impressive things is that they have their own line of vegan ready-meals, including lasagna, curry rice, spaghetti, and even cheese pizza.

You can also easily find vegan cheese, milk, ice cream, yoghurt, meat and more in Coles.

Many branches also have a zero-waste ‘scoop-and-weight’ section for nuts and seeds.

As IGA is often franchised, the vegan options will differ from store to store. So I can only say from the ones that I’ve seen.

The IGA in West End and on Brunswick Street, Brisbane are amazing for vegan, even more so than the big supermarket chains.

Some pretty rare items like Vego white chocolate bar, Olvebra vegan condensed milk, large selection of vegan ice cream from brands like Coyo, denada, Over the Moo and much more.

The IGA on Brunswick Street even has a kombucha tab from Ok Boocha.

Who doesn’t love the bulk portions in Costco that cover half your body?

Costco has increased their vegan options lately. Now you can bulk buy Fry’s burgers, Nutterlex butter, hummus, milk and much more. I even found a big tub of vegan cookie dough!

Aldi is great if you are looking for some budget vegan options. However, out of all the supermarkets mentioned, Aldi has the least variety in my opinion. It’s harder to come across more specialized vegan finds here like ice cream and cheese.

In Melbourne and Sydney, you can find the Cruelty Free Shop. Sydney also has another vegan grocery shop All About Empathy and a vegan butcher Suzy Spoon’s Vegetarian Butcher. You can find The Green Edge in Brisbane, which is an all vegan cafe + shop. In Perth, you can find La Vida Vegan.
