You might have heard that Hong Kong is all about meat and seafood, and that finding good vegan food here is a challenge. But that couldn’t be further from the truth.

In this foodie guide, I've handpicked some of my favourite vegan spots - from trendy cafes and upscale bakeries to must-try yum cha experience - to show you that the plant-based dining scene in Hong Kong is as diverse and exciting as the city itself.

Years 素年

Vegan | Multiple Locations

Years is one of my favourite restaurant chains in Hong Kong, winning me over with its high-quality food and friendly service. All 6 restaurants are 100% vegan, which is amazing to see in Hong Kong where clear labelling for vegan dishes may not be a given.

Each of the restaurants have a slightly different menu and a unique vibe. You can generally expect to find Japanese and Taiwanese inspired fusion dishes in restaurants under Years. Here are some highlights:

Friends of Years

Tucked away in Tsuen Wan on a quiet side street facing a local basketball court, Friends of Years has quickly become one of my favourites. Every meal I've had here has been consistently amazing, including a creamy salmon pasta with calamari, and a Japanese curry risotto with katsu cutlet.

Be with Years

In Whampoa, Be with Years offers the same high quality dishes. I’ve had the Japanese rice set here which has amazing meaty texture. You'll also find options like Impossible meat bolognese and a BBQ sauce lion's mane mushroom baguette.

Wanaka

Next to Blue House in Wan Chai, Wanaka might be smaller with a more concise menu, but it packs a punch with seasonally changing dishes like a standout lasagna featuring local organic amaranth pesto and house-made vegan buffalo cheese. It’s a great spot for a relaxing meal to enjoy the scenic view in the otherwise busy area.

Veggie Kingdom 緻素坊

Vegan | Tsim Sha Tsui

For those seeking an authentic vegan yum cha experience, Veggie Kingdom is a must-try. Located on the 7th floor of the VIP Commercial Center, which is right across from Harbour City in Tsim Sha Tsui, this hidden gem is as authentic and high quality as it gets in terms of traditional yum cha.

All the beloved staples are here: siu mai, rice noodle rolls, spring rolls, and dumplings, each crafted to showcase vibrant flavours and textures. Out of all the dim sum I’ve tried, I was particularly blown away by the shredded turnip puff, mushroom siu mai, and golden vegetable dumplings.

Due to its popularity, it’s wise to book a table in advance or arrive early to secure a spot. Also, keep in mind that there might be a dine-in time limit, so plan your meal accordingly.

[.tips][.icon-ticket][.icon-ticket][.div]Tip: Getting an Octopus Card is a must for Hong Kong. It's accepted by all public transport, supermarkets, convenience stores and many restaurants as well. You can get yours at any MTR train stations, or you can get a special edition tourist one here (pick up at the airport).[.div][.tips]

LN Coffee

Vegan | Sai Ying Pun

LN Coffee is a fully vegan gem in San Ying Pun that has veganised some traditional Hong Kong dishes that you can’t find anywhere else. The wooden decor and relaxed vibe make it a welcoming spot whether you’re dropping in for a meal or a quick afternoon coffee break.

The menu is impressively diverse with some dishes that I haven’t seen anywhere else in the world. My number one recommendation is the Hong Kong style French toast. It’s perfectly executed without using the conventional egg batter. The cinnamon apple version in particular has won me over with its spot on taste and texture compared to the non-vegan version. Another highlight is the vegan egg bubble waffle which is another Hong Kong street food staple.

If you are looking for something savoury, they also have burgers, pasta and some hearty lunch sets, though they aren’t as impressive as the two desserts I’ve mentioned.

Mother Pearl 圓貝

Vegetarian | Multiple Locations

Vegan bubble tea shop with a HK twist. My favourites include the Yuen Yeung 3.0 (yuen yeung is HK style milk tea + coffee) and taro mo-latte, while some drinks may be too experimental for some, like the matcha jasmine which has more toppings than drink. The drink menu is all vegan, but if you want to try their food as well, just make sure to check carefully as not all food items is vegan.

Chuen So Fai 轉素快

Vegetarian | North Point

Chuen So Fai is located in North Point on Hong Kong Island. It is a great destination if you want to try some veganised quintessential Hong Kong street food. It’s a takeaway only place offering no-frills, budget-friendly bites on the go.

I tried a mix of siu maai (燒賣) and curry fish balls (魚蛋), with each set of 5 pieces priced at just $8-10. The snacks came with a distinctive mushroom sauce topping, reminiscent of XO sauce, which added a flavourful kick. They don’t seem to have an English menu, so either use Google translate or show them the Chinese characters in this guide to order the same as mine.

Beyond the Hong Kong street food, you can also find options like rice noodle rolls (腸粉), dumplings (粉果), and fried bean sauce mixed noodles (炸醬拌麵). They even offer bento boxes if you're looking for something more filling - but be sure to ask about the ingredients to make sure it doesn’t contain egg or dairy. For drinks, try a classic soy milk or their hand-crushed iced lemon tea.

MAYA Bakery & Bar

Vegan | Multiple Locations

MAYA Bakery & Bar is a chic vegan bakery that offers a delightful mix of hard-to-find Hong Kong-style baked goods, like Hong Kong-style egg tarts, pineapple buns, chocolate-dipped croissants and more. The selection is impressive, though the quality can be a bit hit-or-miss depending on the item.

Out of everything I tried, the egg tart and lava tart were standouts. They capture the familiar the texture of the non-vegan counterparts quite well, even though the lava tart would be better if served warm. On the flip side, the texture of bread, like the pineapple bun and croissant, tends to be on the dry side and lacks softness.

Beyond the baked goods, MAYA also offers salad bowls, wraps, and even pizza for those looking for a heartier meal (the selection is bigger in their main branch in Taikoo). For drinks, you’ll find a variety of coffee, smoothies, and tea lattes.

Nuttea

Vegan | Multiple Locations

Nuttea stands out as a dedicated vegan bubble tea chain that specialises in nut-based milk, crafted from a blend of five different nuts like almond, hazelnuts and more.

Everything on the menu is vegan. The star here is undoubtedly their nut cream - a thick, decadent topping that elevates any of the bubble tea. They even give you a little shovel to sample the cream before mixing it in to create a creamy bubble tea. The earl grey tea with chocolate nut cream or the grape tea with nut cream are standouts to me.

Snack Baby

Vegan-friendly | Central

A+ vegan gelato from this retro-inspired gelateria. Flavours marked with “AF” (Animal Free) are vegan, the gelato lineup ranges from classic intense chocolate to innovative wasabi lime, but it’s the pistachio crunch that wow’ed me the most. It was so good that I visited twice just to have it again.

The space of Snack Baby is a retro vibe, with both indoors and outdoor seatings, though it gets super busy at night.

Yudei 余地

Vegan | Sham Shui Po

A vegan cafe with a zen atmosphere. Had a rich Japanese curry rice loaded with veggies and a yummy baked potato and pumpkin dish with homemade onion sour cream. And if you’re lucky, try the Basque cheesecake which was amazing.

Tin Tin Vegetarian 天天素食

Vegetarian | Multiple Locations

This popular takeaway chain offers everything from bean curd rolls to sticky rice rolls, but my personal fav is their cheung fun - a classic HK street food that puts generous drizzle of soy sauce, sweet red soy-based sauce, and rich peanut sesame sauce, sesame seeds and an optional chilli sauce on top of steamed rice noodles.
